At ZOKU, design is at the heart of everything we do. Every small design change results from endless internal brainstorming, prototyping, and testing. In this Q&A our designers describe what went into the creation of ZOKU’s Two Tone Collection.
What was the motivation or inspiration behind developing our Two Tone Drinkware Products?
Inspiration for designers is usually informed by ideals—the ideal shape, color, texture, feature that fits perfectly into a context. When we see something that doesn’t quite fit, doesn’t quite work, or misses the mark, it means there is an opportunity for improvement. When looking at the stainless steel bottle market, the only considerations to style were uninspired patterns and colors, with rigid utilitarian shapes. We saw an opportunity to breathe life into this world and give it some character.
What sort of aesthetic effect does the Two Tone look have?
The soft edges, woven finger loop, lightly textured powder coat finish, and bold yet gentle color palette are applied in a way that communicates quality and consideration. The user is drawn in by the overall profile and color. As they examine or use it, they begin to appreciate the details, such as the perfect combination of violet hues or how the woven cord feels when looped around their finger. These details speak to the quality of the experience and create a calm, functional aesthetic.
What’s the difference between regular drinkware and great drinkware?
Most drinkware uses the same technology (Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel), so it’s not enough to just make another bottle. In the context of a highly saturated market with many simple/functional options, great drinkware has distinctive features, aesthetics, and functions that inspire an emotional bond with the user. It could be a pattern applied in just the right way or a sculpted profile that speaks the right language. Whatever it is, it should say, “you need me” and “you can’t get me anywhere else.”
How has ZOKU addressed these points above?
We sweat the details. We seek the perfect combination of colors. The perfect balance of soft and hard edges. The best experience when carrying, sipping, or opening/closing. It’s a simple object that performs a simple task (to drink liquids), but there is much to consider if we want to provide the ideal version of this object/experience that the user continues to love. And at Zoku, we are dedicated to achieving perfection in everything we do.
How does the drinkware fit nicely with other ZOKU products?
One of our overarching goals is to provide necessary objects that bring joy, make life easier, and empower sustainable choices. In addition, we hope to facilitate changes in behavior that are better for our environment and our families but are also just plain fun. With this in mind, we design products that complement each other and tell a bigger story centered around our users. For example, our bottles offer a durable alternative to disposable plastic bottles. Expanding on the desire to reduce waste, we also designed a set of stainless steel utensils with a nifty case and a telescoping stainless steel straw. Both fit into the same lifestyle as our bottles and offer a broader range of solutions to match our users’ goals.
